My
Fair Share
Tom
Oyler
I was
born and raised in America.
This is
my home. My home is being attacked. For several decades my home has
been attacked not by drug dealers or gangs but by politicians. I shouldn't
blame the politicians. We elect them. We have lost many of the rights
that I thought we had. I, like most of you, have retreated from many
of the attacks. I have said to myself that it is not really that important.
It's only one little thing.
The latest
outrage is the 2000 Census. Have you seen the ads or received the letter
from the Census bureau? The burning words meant to provoke a sense of
urgency for completing the form or to provide the needed ammunition
to foster ill will towards others is pervasive. The ads and the letter
say, "get your fair share", implying that you are not getting
it now and that you deserve it.
OK, what
is my fair share? My fair share of what? Do I have my fair share of
money? Do I have my fair share of intangibles like appearance, brains,
athletic ability, etc.? Where does one get the money or intangibles
if one believes that he does not have his fair share? The implication
of the 2000 Census is that if you don't have your fair share then the
government will provide it. Where is it written that the government
will provide your fair share? Where are they going to get my fair share?
If I don't have my fair share then others must have more than their
fair share. The government is going to take it from them and give it
to me?
I have
decided to make a list of the people who have more than me and send
it to the census people. Some on the list are prominent figures and
some are family, friends, or neighbors. This way the government can
take what I deserve from the people I designate instead of some people
I don't know. Sounds like stealing? No, the government says I deserve
it.
I don't
know how I will get my fair share of intangibles. I don't think the
government can take things from God.
What has
happened to the people in this country? This country doesn't owe you
anything but a chance. We are stealing from our family, our neighbors,
and our friends in order to get our so-called fair share. Aren't we
violating a commandment here? Thou shall not covet thy neighbor's goods.
Coveting thy neighbor's goods is all that this fair share give-me crap
is about.
