Clifford
R. Catton

This
50-year-old resident of Kingston, NY is the founder of the Church
of God Party which he began in 1996. He does have one of the most
unique reasons for declaring his candidacy that we at Dark Horse
2000 have yet encountered: "US Postal employees had been stealing
my mail since 1981 suppressing my First Amendment rights to raise
up a NEW Christian denomination, so I decided to be a candidate
for President." Unfortunately, we are unable to follow Catton's
leap between cause and effect, but we're pretty sure he could
explain it given half a chance.
Catton's
primary agenda appears to be raising everyone up out of poverty
and assuring jobs for all. To this end he would create agriculture-based
workers' cities, implement an 8% flat tax, increase the minimum
wage and guarantee anyone who wants one a job paying at least
$15,000 per year. A former consciencious objector, he is also
strongly opposed to military intervention and would do all in
his power to eliminate nuclear weapons. This is a candidate who
has obviously given much thought to improving quality of life
for all Americans. His stand on most issues would be considered
moderate to liberal - at least on the surface. Where he loses
us is when he devolves into vague religious rhetoric, though,
admittedly, he tries his best to keep it out of his practical
political statements. He is also quite vehement on the subject
of "sexual perversions" which he believes have contributed to
the moral decline of America. Unfortunately he doesn't define
his terms. All we can tell is that certain sexual acts upset him
nearly as much as his local postal authorities.
