Albert
Gore

AlŐs
current job as Vice President makes him a front-runner by default
and gives him a bit of a leg up on the competition. Like the other
major candidates, his multi-million dollar campaign budget lets
him create the illusion that he's better suited for the presidency
than the lesser-known, lesser-budgeted contenders. And like the
other Big Guys, he has positioned himself as close to the center
as possible in order to appeal to the maximum number of voters.
Gore has an excellent record on environmental issues, but considering
the rest of his voting record, particularly his support of the
controversial welfare bill, he might as well be a Republican.
The tech media had a field day with Al's infamous remark that
he "took the initiative in creating the Internet", but there's
no disputing that he's got more computer smarts than most politicians
and that, while not the actual inventor of the Internet, he was
an early supporter. However, we should not lose sight of the fact
that it was also Mr. Gore who pushed for the Clipper Chip, tried
to block the lifting of controls on encryption, and was strongly
in favor of the ill-conceived Communications Decency Act. Depending
on your point of view, these may or may not be Good Things, but
his actions indicate a lack of understanding of the nature of
the Internet as a medium for free global communication, and compromising
the First Amendment is never a Good Thing.
We
think he'd probably be a sincere, enthusiastic, uninspiring, unremarkable
President.
