PARTY OVERVIEW

Founded in 1992 to "bring the light of science into politics", the Natural Law party claims to be the fastest growing party in America. They became the first party in history other than the Democrats and Republicans to be granted national party status and qualify for federal matching funds. In the 1996 elections, they fielded 400 candidates in 48 states and won more than 2.5 million votes.

Their presidential candidate is quantum physicist

Dr. John Hagelin, formerly a researcher at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, and Director of the Institute of Science, Technology and Public Policy, a public policy think tank. It's hard to precisely place the Natural Law party on the political spectrum, but we'd say they were more moderate than radical, more liberal than conservative.

Their position seems to stem more from logic and reason than political rhetoric, and their approach to the key issues deals more with finding viable solutions than liberal/conservative political posturing. When you read their platform, you'll find that most of their solutions to volatile issues like Abortion, Drugs and Gun Control are based on education rather than legislation.

Curiously, they seem to be big on Transcendental Meditation™, and see it as part of the solution to most of our problems. We don't feel qualified to offer opinions on meditation or other matters of faith, spiritual discipline, or new age self-help theories (we at DarkHorse 2000 find great solace in little quiet time with cookies and milk) but we tend to cast a fishy eye when that stuff gets mixed up with politics, particularly if it's something that's followed by that little ™ symbol.

OFFICIAL PLATFORM STATEMENT
FROM THE OFFICIAL WEB PAGE

The Natural Law Party stands for prevention-oriented government, conflict-free politics, and proven solutions designed to bring national life into harmony with natural law. The party's platform includes:

• Cutting taxes deeply and responsibly while simultaneously balancing the budget through cost-effective solutions to AmericaÕs problems, rather than by cutting essential services.

• Natural health care programs to prevent disease, promote health, and cut health care costs by 50%.

• Proven educational initiatives and curriculum innovations that develop the inner creative genius of the student and boost educational outcomes.

• Effective, field-tested crime prevention and rehabilitation that significantly reduce crime and recidivism.

• Sustainable agricultural practices to increase crop yields and boost profitability without hazardous chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

• Renewable energy production and energy conservation to reduce polution and create national energy self-sufficiency.

• Reducing government waste and special interest control of our politics.

THE DARKHORSE2000 FISHY-EYED ASSESSMENT

Definitely the party for logical, rational, thinking people who meditate transcendentally. Unfortunately, the United States is not exactly a hotbed of logical, rational, thinking people who meditate, transcendentally or otherwise. In spite of that handicap, their moderate, solution-based position could attract a lot of mainstream support. They're not big enough to get their man in the Whitehouse in 2000, but they're a party to watch in next couple of elections.
