The DarkHorse2000 Questionnaire

In our relentless quest to bring you the Web's best coverage of ALL the presidential candidates, we created an extensive questionnaire and sent it out to all 235 candidates on our list. We haven't gotten them all back yet, but they're steadily trickling in and we'll put them up as they arrive.

Our questionnaire covered not only the usual personal data and their position on the important issues, but a series of questions designed to give you a unique insight into the character and personality of the candidates.

We think you'll find their answers informative, insightful, and entertaining.

POSITION ON THE ISSUES

ABORTION:

Personally oppose abortion on demand for birth control. Would favor limited abortion (rape, incest, health of the mother, if parents knew child would be severely handicapped due to mother's drug use e.g, etc) Would support the right of country to choose thru constitutional amendment. But, right now, abortion is legal and as Chief Executive I would be required to support it until the law changes. Also abhor violence by pro-life groups against doctors and violence and harassment of women planning abortions.

GUN CONTROL:

DRUGS:

Drugs are one of the greatest curses we face in this nation and we have yet to find a solution. I do not have any grand solutions either, in fact, there is no one grand solution. Mandatory prison sentences for users is not working although I still approve of mandatory sentences for those who make and sell drugs. We need more treatment of users and more "boot camp" type programs for users. We need to help people get off drugs, if they want help, and then help them rebuild their lives.

MILITARY SPENDING:

I believe we should finance the kind of military we need to preserve our freedoms and the freedom of others around the globe but I do not approve of intervening in every international situation. We need to be more careful in where we involve our people. Propose increase in spending for recruting, retention, housing, and pay and for some more conventional weapons. Oppose any spending on "star wars" type anti-ballistic missile systems. Ask for GAO review of all military spending to see where we can cut spending. But will not approve of gutting our military like we usually do after the completion of our military actions overseas.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION:

Favor laws preventing pollution of our air, land and water. Would approve of much stronger punishment for corporations that routinely endanger the lives of our citizens with their waste. But we also need common sense in how we treat our environment and not stop projects that would benefit millions because one fish might be endangered.

EDUCATION:

Our educational system is a mess and needs a major overhaul. do not favor choice at present - it will just take a minimum number of students out of our public schools and leave the rest behind without improving their education. Favor replacing 1st-3rd grades with Lower Elementary School where children will be taught reading, reading comprehension, writing, spelling and math. When they master these areas they move to 4th grade. More alternative schools and a major change in the way we run our high schools.

SUPPORT FOR THE ARTS:

I support the arts but do not favor taxpayer support for art that is considered pornographic. That kind of art does not contribute to the public good and to their enlightenment.

IMMIGRATION:

We have to maintain some control over the number of people entering this country every year or we will be overwhelmed. And I see nothing wrong with controlling the number of immigrants from each country. We do not have unlimited resources here to support all the people who would like to emigrate here. But I would encourage immigration as much as possible without lowering opportunities for people already living here. And, further, I believe we should require people who want to live here to learn and speak English. If they want to speak a foreign langugage at home, that's fine, but in business and in our schools they need to learn our langugage as we would have to do if we emigrated to their country.

FOREIGN AID:

Favor keeping foreign aid to a minimum. We have to provide some aid to help other countries in specific situations but it should not be a long term hand-out process. We should have provided much more aid to Eastern Europe after the fall of communism but we failed to do it and we will pay the price in the future.

PRIVACY RIGHTS:

Support strong laws favor right of privacy for our citizens. Any company wanting to share information on people must have their permission to do so. Thru computers, it is far too easy for people to gain info on anyone they want and even steal their identity. We need to enforce all privacy laws.

INTERNET REGULATION:

I understand why people do not want business on the Internet taxed but cannot support their rationale. Why should we force a local book store to collect taxes on everything they sell while letting a major book seller on the Internet get away without charging any taxes. That is not fair and fairness should be the basis of our tax system.

CORPORATE REGULATION:

We dropped most of the regulations on corporations in the last 20 years and we will be paying the price for that over the next 25 or 50 years. We actually encourage American corporations to send our jobs overseas by not taxing the products they ship back into this country using labor that replaced good paying jobs here. If corporations refuse to operate in the public interest we need to revoke their corporate charter. Also, we need to change the laws that let American cruise ships e.g. to charter their ships in another country and not charge them any taxes. If they are a corporation registered here, they need to pay taxes on ALL their earnings.

DEATH PENALTY:

Whether or not the death penalty really reduces crime is still debatable but I still approve it. If you take someone else's life deliberately then I think you forfeit the right to yours.
